An Ibond ha a Fixed Rate and then a Variable Rate that changes every 6 months (May and November) which is pegged to CPI-U. You must hold the bonds for a least 12 months before you can redeem them. Early redemption comes with a loss of the last 3 months of interest. After 5 years this will not the be the case. I bonds earn interest for 30 years if you don't cash the bonds before they mature.
